Robots Search Airport

Do robots search airport yet?  Yes!  A striking example in the use of robots to enhance security is the Athens International Airport.  The airport received two security systems to help identify and safely remove explosives found in passenger cargo. The systems were given to the airport by the Stavros Niarchos foundation, a philanthropic organization.

The first robot system known as “Hercules”, has a spherical molded tank that is 120 cm in diameter.  The robot uses two folding arms to handle potentially dangerous cargo. The second system, the “Ulysses”, complements the “Hercules” by giving it access to areas that are difficult to navigate such as airplanes, airport restrooms, and buses. It can also navigate rough surfaces successfully thanks to an advanced shock absorbing system.  Will these robots search airports besides the Athens International Airports in the near future? If they are successful in discovering and safely disposing of hazardous items then a safe bet would be “yes”.
